no but be prepared for hip dysplasia and definately put it on a joint supplement as early as you can. and make sure you train it because otherwise it won't be a very good dog. they are nervous dogs so socialize it with other animals and people A LOT as a puppy.

Reply:If you are getting it from a reputable breeder it will already HAVE a name, or at least there will be a "rule" as to what sort of name all pups in that litter are to be given.





If you are getting it from a BYB or any of the agents of a puppy miller (eg, a pet shop) - god help it, and I don't care what you call it, I just wish people wouldn't encourage those operations to produce animals that do NOT live up to the requirements for being breed-worthy GSDs.





For training purposes, most people find a 2-syllable name perfect, but some people prefer a 1-syllable name. Go to your back door and try calling the names encouragingly, to get your imaginary dog to come inside. Then yell them angrily to tell your imaginary dog that it's doing something forbidden. That pair of "tests" will quickly eliminate most of the suggestions you've been given, some failing the "call test", some failing the "growl test".


If the pup doesn't already have a name, save the last half dozen or so possibilities until you have your pup and can sense which is most fitting for him/her - and remember that the name has to to apply to 12-to-15 years of the dog's life as an adult, not just to a few months of it as a cute pup.





"janelly_..." obviously sees just dogs from non-reputable breeders. I have NEVER fed a "joint supplement"; my last case of hip dysplasia was born in 1983, and that wasn't in a litter I had planned, it was a "surprise present" from a dog pup who was allowed to run unsupervised with his dam while she was on-heat, because he was too small to mate her, and anyway he was too young to be fertile. Yeah, right.....


And NO-ONE should buy a nervous pup. Leave it to annoy the breeder. Choosing a pup because you feel SORRY for it is the very worst reason.

Shiloh might be pleasing as a name, but as there are kennels producing giant cross-breeds called Shilohs that are based mainly on GSDs plus Malamutes, it is not a name that should be given to a GSD - that would be like calling it "Beagle" or "Chihuahua" or "Poodle" or "Cockerpoo".
